What is Cloud Hero and how does it work?

Cloud Hero is a small application which you load on your PC. It creates a new drive on your system called a VIRTUAL DRIVE. Anything you drag into this drive is then considered a folder and file to monitor to send up to your different cloud accounts. These cloud accounts can be any number of different clouds like Google for e-mail and office documents to Flickr for all your images.

What Cloud Hero does once you have your cloud account settings entered is take all you’re dropped in files to the virtual drive and sorts them and sends the files up to the appropriate cloud. For example all your office documents (Word, Excel, Power Point) will be pushed up automatically to the Google Docs cloud including your PDF's.

Cloud Hero also monitors all file activity on your cloud account and on the PC. So if you modify a file in your Google Docs, Cloud Hero on the PC recognizes this change and will pull down to your PC a copy of the modified cloud file. So your Cloud and your PC are always in sync. If you are traveling and go offline with your PC (in the airplane) and you want to work on a spreadsheet - then just open the virtual drive version (it is the most current version because the cloud and the virtual drive are synced). Modify and save the changes to the excel file plus add more files (new files if you like) to your virtual drive. When you land and get to your hotel room and connect to the internet your virtual drive files are automatically sent to your cloud account. You do not need to remember to do a thing it is all managed by Cloud Hero for you.

This allows you to have fully redundant backup in the cloud and if you access your virtual drive files while online you’re updating your cloud account knowing that you’re PC will get the updated file when your connected to the internet.

For all other types of files you have on your PC which you would like backed up but do not fit into your clouds such as QuickBooks/Quicken, you can use Amazon's S3 backup storage option built into Cloud Hero.

Can I use Disk Hero if I have a firewall?

Yes. For maximum data protection, in addition to Disk Hero online backup software, we recommend that you use a firewall and virus protection software. A firewall protects your incoming and outgoing connections from abuse by un-trusted software. There are both software and hardware firewalls. Some of the most popular software firewalls include Norton Personal Firewall (part of Norton Internet Security), ZoneAlarm, McAfee, Spygate and Tiny just to mention a few.

Typically your firewall will not interfere with Disk Hero because the agent is installed and runs locally. Our software actually initiates the connection to the data centers from your computer and not by a request from our data centers.

If you get a message that Disk Hero could not connect to the data center (e.g. the connection was refused, the data center is busy or unreachable, or a dialog box saying "Waiting to Retry", this means that the Disk Hero software cannot access the internet.

You will need to configure your software firewall setting to allow:

NORTON

You need to configure your Norton / Symantec Internet Security software firewall to allow Disk Hero permission to connect to the Internet.

Changes to either may prevent cause your firewall to block Disk Hero’s attempt to connect.

Open Norton / Symantec Internet Security by clicking the system tray icon (like this image below) or Start > Programs (or All Programs) > Norton (Symantec) Internet Security.

To do a quick test to see if NORTON is blocking Disk Hero disable Norton for 5 minutes and send some files up via the Disk Hero agent application to verify they sent up ok.

4. Click the Personal Firewall tab (or Client Software tab for Symantec Corp Edition) in the middle of the screen.

5. Click the Configure button on the bottom right.

6. Click the Programs tab.

7. Under the Main Program Control list find

"Disk Hero Registration" (DiskHeroRegistration.exe)
"Disk Hero Agent” (DiskHeroAgent.exe)
"Disk Hero Remote Agent” (DiskHeroRemoteAgent.exe)
"Disk Hero Server” (DiskHeroServer.exe)

and set Internet Access to "Permit All".

8. Test to make sure Disk Hero will connect to the Internet.

9. Open Disk Hero – BACKUP ICON – right click and EXECUTE BACKUP.

10. If you ever see this "Program Control" screen pop up regarding any Disk Hero program as listed at the top of this article such as:

"Disk Hero Registration" (DiskHeroRegistration.exe)
"Disk Hero Agent” (DiskHeroAgent.exe)
"Disk Hero Remote Agent” (DiskHeroRemoteAgent.exe)
"Disk Hero Server” (DiskHeroServer.exe)
"Disk Hero Executive" (DiskHeroExecutive.exe)

or "Disk Hero", just select "Permit" and click OK.

ZONE ALARM

1. You need to configure your ZoneLabs' ZoneAlarm software firewall to allow Disk Hero permission to connect to the Internet.

2. Changes to either may prevent and cause your firewall to block Disk Hero’s attempt to connect.

3. Open ZoneLabs' ZoneAlarm by clicking the system tray icon (like the image below) or Start > Programs > ZoneLabs > ZoneAlarm.

4. Click the Program Control tab on the left.

5. Find any of these files:

"Disk Hero Registration" (DiskHeroRegistration.exe)
"Disk Hero Agent” (DiskHeroAgent.exe)
"Disk Hero Remote Agent” (DiskHeroRemoteAgent.exe)

3. Open McAfee Personal Firewall by clicking the system tray icon (like the image below) or Start > Programs > McAfee > Personal Firewall.

4. Click the Internet Access tab.

5. Find the files:

"Disk Hero Agent” (DiskHeroAgent.exe)
"Disk Hero Remote Agent” (DiskHeroRemoteAgent.exe)
"Disk Hero Server” (DiskHeroServer.exe)

and change Permissions to Allow Full Access.

6. Test to make sure Disk Hero will connect to the Internet.

7. Open Disk Hero – BACKUP ICON – right click and EXECUTE BACKUP.

8. If you ever see this "Program Control" screen pop up regarding any Disk Hero program as listed at the top of this article such as:

If you are asked to retry or cancel the connection and suspect your firewall or router might be causing the connection problem, temporarily disable or shut down your firewall or remove your router from the network and try backing up again. A reboot may be necessary. If the backup connection works, you know the firewall or router was the issue, and you can troubleshoot it further.

How to set up and manage File Distribution lists

We have a great tool for always updating file to multiple computers or sending out patches to all systems in your File Distribution lists. Follow these steps to get your distribution lists set up:

All PC must be on a minimum version of Disk Hero 5.2.0

First login to your web portal at www.diskhero.com. There are links on the left for file distribution, the top two links explain an overview of how file distribution works. The link for "set up and managing distribution lists" is where you begin inputting data. If you have some lists already set up you will see the list below and you can manage the distribution lists appropriately. If you do not have any lists set up pick the number of list you wish to begin setting up and you will be asked to name the list such as management, outside sales, telemarketing, manufacturing, etc.

You will then see in the setup screen 2 windows - on the left is the master list of all your accounts that are running Disk Hero backup and on the right side you will see a window that allows you to show who belongs to which distribution list. If you're adding people to distribution lists make sure you first choose which distribution list they are to join, look above the right window in the pull-down menu. By holding down the control key down and using your mouse to click on multiple users on the left side then hit the add button in the middle of the windows. This adds your user accounts to the file distribution lists automatically. You just have to reverse the process by clicking on the users in the right window and you hit the remove button and this takes them off the distribution list.

Below your distribution add/removes area you will see a section that identifies each user within that distribution list and allows you to tell the system were to place any new files you want going to these systems. This is helpful if you need to send files to has a specific area where you need that file to reside on each receiving system. An example of this is if you need to patch system software or you are sending updates or just doing system maintenance. So you can specifically tell where the distribuTed files are supposed to be sent to on ALL of the receiving PCs or specify an exact location for each individual PC one at a time.

As far as the number of files and how large the files your sending through file distribution there is no limitations at this point.

So that's all you need to do from your web portal. When you want to send the file just open the regular Disk Hero application running on your PC and hit the file distribution icon on the top right corner. You will be asked what file you want to send and which group you want to send the file to. Hit okay and the on application wizard screens walk you through the rest of the set up. You can see these images on a web portal link on left called "Application Screen Images" Note: the last image in this section does not show for business and Reseller accounts using file distribution. The end user receiving the files will not see any screens - the entire process is transparent.

Remote Account Management

REMOTE ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT

Overview:

On the left hand side you will see the 'reseller' options. These options are only available to the master or main account. Last column says MANAGE ACCOUNT & DOWNLOAD (see image 1 below). You will see all of the options available to you for account maintenance. At the bottom you will see a list of paths backed up (a tree - see image 2 below). You can traverse the directories, and if you click on a folder with files, you can see the files just to the right and you can download them, delete them, etc.

Just above the tree view is an option to 'add a path'. You can use environment variables here, or we have 3 predefined choices for My Documents, Desktop and Favorites, or you can put in C:\program files\some program\, etc. When you hit save changes, you will see the paths that you added next to 'pending paths'. These can take up to a maximum of 30 minutes to propagate to the agents/users PC. The 30 minute delay also happens for file deletes from this screen (if you delete a file in control panel, it will still show active in the users PC agent/application for up to 30 minutes, and then it will not show).

You will also notice 'group' and 'organization'. You can create different groups for each of your branches. Then you can go to the to 'globalize' the account details screen so you can make one change and have it span across all agents/user PCs at once. Disk Hero's Remote Target application also takes into account and handles groups.

We also added a checkbox for 'Allow user to delete files'. If unchecked, the delete files option in the agent/users PC application disappears.

Included functions are:

Ability to add outlook after account is set up (under acct. details)
Ability to delete all version of a file from within the Web Portal
Ability to remove a single file from the backup plan
Ability to manage file exception list, and retry files from within Web Portal

Executive Overview:
Disk Hero Carbon Copy is an automated Carbon Copy program to keep your data on multiple computers up-to-date with the latest current file information. You modify a file on your main PC and all your other target PCs are automatically updated with this recently changed file. A full copy of the main PC back up files are sent over to the target system(s) so full data duplication is realized. For example: This page you are reading is revised and becomes a changed file. This file is sent to Disk Hero's backup servers. Carbon Copy then says it is to send this new copy to 3 other computers and the Carbon Copy is complete. On the target systems you can read the files and do what you like with them but they are not sent back to the originating PC as a modified or updated file. You can set up the 2nd PC to do Carbon Copy with the first PC so both PCs are sending files back and forth making full data copies of each other. Make sure each PC has enough hard drive space.

Step 1: Manage a few of the global settings that will effect all your end user accounts

Set up Organizations/Companies then GROUPS so you can easily sort through the end user accounts

Step 2: Set up your method of entering in end-user accounts. Using Disk Hero's re-distributable installed is the easiest and fastest process where the end-user does a one-click install and you do not have to dial into each system providing your on the same domain. If all your end-users are not on same domain then the re-distributable allows the end user to install and you can manage what is backed up from your web log in area after there install is running. Usually you want the end user to mark the critical data to be backed up if your not on the same domain.

First go to www.diskhero.com and along the top look for RESELLER button. Read the info and click on the link to OPEN A RESELLER ACCOUNT. Once opened you will log into your secure web portal account and see a page like this - there will not be as many accounts list in the main body section when you first login, but as you add accounts the main body section will fill up like you see in this image:

What is RT and how does it work?

Disk Hero RT - Remote Target
stores data at a designated remote location. Disk Hero Server will sync a full copy of your compressed and encrypted data which is stored on the Disk Hero servers all done automatically, to your local remote PC or external drive.

What is remote targeting? Disk Hero RT (Remote Targeting) is the added disaster recovery feature where you setup a target computer or external hard drive and your data is backed up from the Disk Hero backed up servers to your target computer. This allows you to have an entire copy of your data at a remote location. New and updated files are copied to the remote target automatically, just like your regular disk hero back up.

Why would you want this? In case of a catastrophic event, such as a fire or theft. You need to get your business financial information back online quickly to keep your business running. Your Remote Target copy allows you to restore your data immediately, without having to wait for a large download via the Internet.

Having an external hard drive connected to a server or PC within your business walls is not a good solution. Disk Hero RT allows you to say "yes disk hero backup my data remotely but also send a copy of your backup files to this remote location. The remote target location can be a home PC, or a remote office workstation. Anywhere convenient it is not in the same building..

What does Disk Hero remote target do? It stores a full copy of your data at a secondary location that you determine. The target system needs to be a computer running Windows 2000, XP, the Vista with at least 512k of RAM. This target system requires enough hard drive space to handle the backup files. You can have an external hard drive residing on this target computer or an internal hard drive big enough to handle the data transfer and storage. Each remote target system requires a small somewhat invisible piece of software called an "agent". This agent maintains a heartbeat back to the main Disk Hero server's asking if there are any new data files. If there is new data Disk Hero servers push to the remote target to get newly backed up files. This heartbeat happens every hour providing each system remains on. If turned off then when booted up the heartbeat is done 30 minutes after PC boot up and then every hour.
