Can I use Disk Hero if I have a firewall?

Yes. For maximum data protection, in addition to Disk Hero online backup software, we recommend that you use a firewall and virus protection software. A firewall protects your incoming and outgoing connections from abuse by un-trusted software. There are both software and hardware firewalls.  Some of the most popular software firewalls include Norton Personal Firewall (part of Norton Internet Security), ZoneAlarm, McAfee, Spygate and Tiny just to mention a few.

Typically your firewall will not interfere with Disk Hero because the agent is installed and runs locally. Our software actually initiates the connection to the data centers from your computer and not by a request from our data centers.

If you get a message that Disk Hero could not connect to the data center (e.g. the connection was refused, the data center is busy or unreachable, or a dialog box saying "Waiting to Retry", this means that the Disk Hero software cannot access the internet.

You will need to configure your software firewall setting to allow:

For PCs and USB/U3 drives:
"Disk Hero Agent” (DiskHeroU3.exe)

For Servers:
"Disk Hero Registration" (DiskHeroRegistration.exe)
"Disk Hero Agent” (DiskHeroAgent.exe)
"Disk Hero Remote Agent” (DiskHeroRemoteAgent.exe)
"Disk Hero Server” (DiskHeroServer.exe)
"Disk Hero Executive" (DiskHeroExecutive.exe)

See below for HOW-TO step by step instructions about your brand of software firewall.

If you are asked to retry or cancel the connection and suspect your firewall or router might be causing the connection problem, temporarily disable or shut down your firewall or remove your router from the network and try backing up again. A reboot may be necessary. If the backup connection works, you know the firewall or router was the issue, and you can troubleshoot it further.

You did not mention a coporate fire wall problem where the user (me) does not have access to it or to anyone who regulates it. There is a proxy where I am. What do you do about that? SEE THIS ARTICLE: http://www.diskhero.com/kb/article.aspx?id=10276

AVG??? What do I do with this? I havent tried to use Disk Hero with it, but I wonder if it will work. I can use the same "safe sites" list you have for Norton if it wont work. I just wanted to make the comment about AVG Professional which I find has less overhead than Norton (a nightmare of spilling over all systems) or McCaffee which I found (years ago) to be uneffective. Im very happy with the "lightness" of AVG overhead and the way it works without bothering me (updates daily). Answer: Disk Hero works fine with AVG no problem just add Disk Hero to your APPROVED list of rrunning software.
